Orchard Vew

The pears are looking wonderful so far

Our small orchard of apple trees and one pear tree are fairing well this season

Garden Watchdog

Jake our dachshund oversees the lawn leading to the garden.  Although I've never seen him go after a rabbit or other garden loving creature, his bark is ferocious.

Weekly Progress Report

Last week I was able to get the tomatoes staked and hay placed around the plants.  We are in need of a good soaking rain, but I have soaker hoses as backup for Mother Nature.

A place of healing

The garden always was a place of refuge for me.  It was where I could go on the worst of days and find solace.  When I started planting the garden after my husband's death, I believed it would be a grief garden, but I am finding it to be a healing garden instead.

Poet's Corner

As Spring unfolds itself and the cold winter passes, I am reminded of what has passed.  The following poem was written as part of my wedding vows.  In memory of my husband I have included it here.  It was later published in Zephyrus

A Winter Solstice Song

When I was a girl I made a wish on the wind,
watched it bend the grasses in the fields and
chase the leaves from the trees
in search of…

Today we have flung open the doors,
washed the steps with rain
brought here by a northern wind.

The candles whisper in foreign phrases,
flickering words that we have come to speak,
tendered by mossy thoughts,
keeping  us warm on this
long and dark winter night.

Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, as all fairy tales begin,  I loved a beautiful man and he loved me and my three handsome sons.  We spent fifteen years together filled with poetry, bliss, tending the cattle and horses, teaching, and then illness came and he passed away.  But before he died, he told me that I would be able to make a life for myself on this land we had purchased just months before his illness.  He had faith that I would be strong enough to survive, so this is the beginning of my journey out of the darkness. I am Briar Rose.
